Problem:
Ice dams cause millions of dollars worth of damage every winter. Ice dams are caused by the accumulation of snow on roof tops that compacts and forms ice barriers that further exacerbate the problem.
Solution:
The solution is to install heating panels on your roof that can heat up in less than 15 minutes and melt the snow off the roof before it can accumulate and make ice damns. In the case of this project, the client came to use with a somewhat functional prototype that he wanted to make more manufacturable. We ended up using a kapton heater panel that was adhesive backed and stuck to a sheet metal panel. The panels could be nailed to a roof and daisy chained together with up to 10 other panels to line up to 30 feet of roof on a single 20 amp circuit. I researched and tested the necessary electrical components, built the entire CAD model, fabricated the prototyped in-house and provided manufacturing support through our vendors in china.
